Sony's Mobile Game Plans Could Be Hurt by PlayStation

It was last week when Sony said it would be joining the mobile game market. As part of this strategy, the company even put up the new ForwardWorks studio. Sony even gave fans a peek to potential titles set for release which included some PlayStation classics.

The initial plan entails the release of 10 mobile games, 6 of which is scheduled for release in 2017. Commonly known by PlayStation fans in the US as Hot Shots Golf, the first release will be Everybody's Golf. Sony hopes that with this offering, it will be able to enter the booming mobile game market.

Some analysts are saying that this is where the problem lies for Sony. Although the choice to offer classic games instead of PlayStation's current titles is admirable, it brings with it some issues. Some of these games may not be fit for mobile gaming and will need redesign or even retooling.

Even if Sony mobile games do manage to make that work, there is the issue of the titles themselves. Do many of the new players even know Everybody's Golf or for that matter Parappa the Rapper? These same fans though can easily identify with PlayStation games but this is more on the newer titles like Metal Gear Solid or Final Fantasy.

Those who have been following Sony know that this is not the first time it has made its presence felt in mobile gaming. For those who can still remember, Sony had released PlayStation Mobile in the past. The company later decided to put a stop to it by the summer of 2015.

Only time will tell if Sony's venture to this market will be as successful as the PlayStation. That it plans to release such games first in Japan is by itself an excellent move. In the Japanese gaming market, half of the sales have been attributed to mobile gaming.
