New York Yankees Acquire Nathan Eovaldi
The New York Yankees have completed a deal with the Miami Marlins. According to Marc Carig with Newsday, the Yankees acquired right-hander Nathan Eovaldi, first baseman Garrett Jones and pitching prospect, Domingo German. The Yankees will give up Martin Prado and David Phelps in the deal.
"I don't think he's a finished product," Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said regarding Eovaldi according to John Harper of the New York Daily News. "He's got a great deal of ability, and we're really excited to add him to the mix."
Eovaldi, 24, posted a 6-14 record in 2014 with a 4.37 ERA in 33 starts. Despite a rough season, Eovaldi has a 95-96 four-seam fastball that was ranked second among all of the starting pitchers last year. He was also able to locate his pitch within the strike zone more than most starting pitchers.
"He's [Eovaldi] got a great gift-there's no doubt about that," Cashman said via David Waldstein of The New York Times. "Now it's just a matter of harnessing that gift."
Joel Sherman with the New York Post added that Yankees' pitching coach Larry Rothschild could be just want Eovaldi needs.
Sherman writes, "The Yankees adore power arms, and both Eovaldi and German have those. However, Eovaldi has not translated that lightning into consistent effectiveness...The Yankees believe they have in Larry Rothschild one of the finer pitching coaches in raising the effectiveness of hurlers with stuff, and they clearly see room for Eovaldi to evolve into something better."
German, 22, also has a great arm with a lot of potential. The youngster made 25 starts for Low-A Greensboro. He had an ERA of 2.48 with 113 strikeouts and 25 walks over 123.1 innings.
Eovaldi will become a free agent after the 2017 season.
