Despite controversial remarks, Donald Trump continues to receive national support.

The Republican presidential candidate and real estate businessman, Trump, has reached 41 percent in the most recent national Monmouth University poll, which was released on Monday. The poll only factors in registered voters who identify as Republicans and voters who are independent but leaning toward the Republican ballot.

This is the highest rate recorded from the Republican side of the presidential run. It is also the first time that Trump has hit the 40 percent mark.

"Trump is tapping into the phenomenon," said Patrick Murray, who is the lead in conducting the Monmouth poll, reported by ABC News. "The more he says things that make the Republican leaders cringe, the more he attracts people to his side."

The majority of Trump's support is coming from high-school educated voters (54 percent), who are leaning Republican, and those who are strongly tied to the party (11 percent). In terms of gender, 44 percent of men and 37 percent of women support Trump.

The poll was conducted after Trump was heavily criticized for his proposal on temporarily banning Muslims from entering the U.S. Since he made those remarks, world leaders and fellow Republicans have either condemned or distanced themselves from Trump's proposal.

Following Trump is Senator Ted Cruz, who has 14 percent support from Republicans. Senator Marco Rubio holds 10 percent support while retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson has nine percent.
