Ellen Page Gets Emotional Talking About Coming Out Experience
On the Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Ellen Page became emotional talking about her coming out experience, to be able to boldly tell the world that she is gay, reports the Daily Mail. "I feel so grateful for it. I feel so grateful to feel how I feel now, compared when I was a closeted person," Page said on the show. "It's not a nice place to be. I was sad. It is toxic and I wish that no one had to live that way."
Further, at the premieres of the movie Freeheld in New York City, she told ET that going public with her relationship with girlfriend Samantha Thomas is very special and beautiful to her. "So far, that's not something I've experienced in my life," Page said. "And to love someone openly, to hold someone's hand walking down the street, it's a beautiful, beautiful, beautiful thing, and I'm just lucky enough to have someone in my life as special as her."
The two were spotted together at the movie premiers. However, Page made her red carpet debut with girlfriend Thomas at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) earlier on September 13th. Ever since, the actress has openly shared photos of herself and her girlfriend on Instagram.
According to the Human Rights Council Blog, Page came out of the closet a year back and made headlines after she came out at Human Rights Council (HRC) Time to THRIVE conference in 2014. This weekend, at HRC's 19th Annual National Dinner, HRC looks forward to present the HRC's National Vanguard Award to Ellen Page for her courage and leadership towards LGBT causes.
"Ellen Page has been an inspiration for LGBT youth around the world," HRC President Chad Griffin said. "Her willingness to speak her truth for all to hear, and to confront injustice against LGBT people, has made her a role model and there is no one more deserving of HRC's National Vanguard Award."
