‘Winds of Winter’ Release Date: Here are Three Things We Know About George R.R. Martin’s Next Book
"Games of Thrones" fans are desperately waiting for George R.R. Martin, the author behind the book series, "A Song of Ice and Fire," which the HBO show is based on, to reveal when his highly anticipated sixth book, "Winds of Winter," will be released.
Since the updates on the status of the books have remained pretty much the same, here is a recap of what we know and can hopefully expect.
1. Book might be getting published soon
When the 66-year-old author uploaded a somewhat cryptic post on his blog, Not a Blog, about how people will be working while he is away, rumors that the book has been finished started to circulate the Internet like wildfire.
In the post, Martin wrote:
"And while I will be travelling, my army on minions will be here at the old homestead, toiling in the paper mines."
People started speculating that "minions" refers to people who work in publishing and the "paper mines" are referencing the printers that are need to make a book. Based solely from this one sentence, people are claiming that "Winds of Winter" could be released before the end of this year.
2. A Plot Twist May or May Not be in Store for a Major Character
The only teaser that Martin has mentioned about "Winds of Winter" is a potential plot twist for one of the major characters.
"This is going to drive your readers crazy but I love it. I'm still weighing whether to go that direction or not. It's a great twist," he said.
The twist reportedly would affect three or four other characters as well.
"It's easy to do things that are shocking or unexpected, but they have to grow out of characters. They have to grow out of situations. Otherwise, it's just being shocking for being shocking. But this is something that seems very organic and natural, and I could see how it would happen. And with the various three, or four characters involved... it all makes sense. But it's nothing I've ever thought of before," Martin said reported by the International Business Times. "The show has already - on this particular character - made a couple decisions that will preclude it, where in my case I have not made those decisions."
3. Martin is Devoted to the Book
Martin has proven that he is devoted to finishing the book by canceling several events. He has also promised fans that he will only be working on "Winds of Winter."
"I wish it was out now. Maybe I'm being overly optimistic about how quickly I can finish. But I canceled two convention appearances, I'm turning down a lot more interviews-anything I can do to clear my decks and get this done," he said back in April to Entertainment Weekly.
After "Winds of Winter," there is one more book left to write in the series.
