Elderly woman accidentally drives into harbor, mistakes boat launch for road
It's not uncommon to make a wrong turn while driving even though you may be following a GPS system. An elderly woman from Maine made a navigation error after she mistook a boat launch ramp for a road and drove straight into the harbor, according to reports.
Eva Lenfest, 92, was driving her sedan on Thursday morning when she plunged into the water of Belfast Harbor, the Pen Bay Pilot reported.
"There's no doubt in my mind they saved her life," Officer Wendall Ward of the Belfast Police Department said.
Bryden Burleson and Howard Whitcomb saw Lenfest's car go into the water and immediately took action.
Officers say she was about 90 feet out from the shore and in water 10 to 12 feet deep.
Officials said both the ramp and the surface of the water were covered in a layer of leaves, and Lenfest later said she had thought she was driving on the road, according to the Bangor Daily News. There was also heavy rain that morning, which further decreased visibility.
"Bryden was in the boat," Whitcomb said. "He had actually got the door open and got her unhooked, and he was trying to get her out but the car was going down. So I jumped in the boat and we got hold of her and pulled her out."
"They pulled her out of the car, like, just a split second before it went under," Pickering said. "She is a very lucky woman. Very, very lucky."
