Lupita Nyong'o's Pearl Dress Update: Thieves Return Dress After Discovering it's Fake
Could the case of the missing $150,000 pearl dress that Lupita Nyong'o wore to the Oscars be finally over? A dress that bears an uncanny resemblance to the custom gown taken from Nyong'o's hotel room earlier this week has been recovered after the thief found out the dress was fake, according to reports.
Los Angeles police found what they believe is the missing Calvin Klein gown in a bathroom of the London West Hollywood hotel after a tipster called gossip site TMZ claiming to be the thief, the site reported.
The media source said the thief removed two pearls from the dress and took them to the Garment District in downtown Los Angeles where they were told they were not real, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Lieutenant Michael White.
Detectives were trying to verify whether the recovered dress is the same one Nyong'o wore, she said.
The anonymous caller, who reached out to TMZ around 2:30 p.m. Friday, claimed they noticed the door to Nyong'o's room was ajar and grabbed the dress, created from 6,000 white pearls.
Nyong'o won an Oscar in 2014 for her role in "Twelve Years a Slave" and was a presenter at Sunday's ceremony.
