Copenhagen synagogue shooting update: police detain two suspected of aiding gunman
Copenhagen police announced Monday they had detained two men suspected of aiding a gunman who killed two people in twin attacks in the Danish capital over the weekend.
"The two men are suspected of aiding and abetting the perpetrator in connection with the shooting attacks at Krudttoenden (cultural centre) and (the synagogue) in Krystalgade," police said in a statement, according to Agence France-Presse.
Jewish volunteer Dan Uzan was killed on Sunday while guarding a synagogue during a batmitzvah at the Central Synagogue in Copenhagen.
The two were arrested Sunday and will appear before a judge on Monday morning, it said.
The gunman suspected in the deadly Copenhagen attacks was a 22-year-old with a history of violence and may have been inspired by Islamic terrorists - and possibly the Charlie Hebdo massacre in Paris, Danish authorities said Sunday.
Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt called the two shootings a "cynical act of terror against Denmark."
Copenhagen was hit this weekend by an assault on a cultural center hosting a debate on Islam and free speech late Saturday, followed within hours by an armed attack on the city's main synagogue. Two people died in the attacks and five police were injured.
