One person is dead and a police officer injured in a shooting incident in northeastern Mississippi on Sunday.

Two officers from the Iuka Police Department started following a man in a car around 6:10 p.m., Mississippi Bureau of Investigation spokesman Warren Strain said according to the Associated Press.

According to the report, Strain said the Iuka Police Department were following a man who bailed out of his car and ran inside the Wal-Mart.

Strain says the officers followed and the man opened fire. Officers returned fire, killing him.

One officer was taken to a hospital for a minor injury and has since been released. No bystanders were injured.

The preliminary investigation shows a conservation officer inside the store may have also been involved in the shooting, Strain said.

The suspect has been identified as Howard Brent Means Jr., 34, of Tishomingo, Mississippi.

Iuka is about 100 miles southwest of Nashville, Tennessee.

The Tishomingo County Sheriff's Office posted to facebook:  "At this time we can only confirm there was a shooting at the Walmart in Iuka. There are injuries. No other details are available at this time as the investigation is ongoing. We would like to ask everyone to say a prayer for all involved."
