A Kenyan member of parliament was murdered in the capital of Nairobi as he traveled through the city with his entourage.

The BBC reports that MP George Muchai and three of his aides were killed in a well planned attack. The attack began when Muchai's vehicle was rammed by the assailants as it made its way through a roundabout.

The attack left Muchai, his driver, and two bodyguards dead. After killing Muchai and members of his entourage, the attackers took a briefcase that was in the vehicle and handguns that the bodyguards had been carrying.

The New York Times reports that the attack took place as the group stopped for a newspaper. Muchai made his name in politics and ascended through the ranks to become an MP after starting out as a trade unionist.

The Times reports that the attackers entered a getaway vehicle driven by another man after stealing the briefcase and weapons.

The Guardian says the attack took place as Muchai made his way home from a family gathering at a local restaurant early Saturday morning.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, although the terrorist group al Shabaab has been known to carry out attacks in Kenyan territory. In the last several months the group has murdered teachers and workers as they traveled to their jobs in the Kenyan regions that border Somalia. Those incidents left dozens dead.

Al Shabaab's single most devastating attack in Kenya took place in Sept. 2013 when armed gunman stormed the mall, killing 67 people. It took several days before Kenyan police and military forces were able to regain control of the shopping center.
