Uber Launching In-app Safety Features For Indian Users
Uber is launching a bunch of safety features for users in India, including a "panic button." The move follows the news that Mumbai is readying a ban on the ride-sharing service. Recently Uber was questioned regarding its practices in the wake of rape allegations against a driver in New Delhi last year.
"On February 11 next week, we are launching two significant, additional built-in safety features:
i) In-app panic (SOS) button that allows a rider to alert the local Police at the push of a button in case of an emergency.
ii) Safety Net feature, which will allow users to easily share their trip details and real-time location with up to 5 friends and family members," Uber wrote in the blog.
In addition, Uber will also set up a dedicated team and process to manage emergencies.
"We have established a dedicated local Incident Response Team that oversees and responds to incidents against property and person reported by riders and will also receive a notification (in addition to the local Police) when the in-app panic button is pressed. This specialized team has completed an extensive training programme by our US safety experts and will be reachable 24×7. They will also assist local law enforcement officers during distress situations."
The ride-sharing service is not promoting the physical panic buttons saying they "cause confusion and are prone to wear and tear, but will allow independent drivers to install them with safeguards."
