The phone will by available on bq.com for 169.90 euros ($195), a price that puts it in competition with low-to-midrange phones. The phones initially will be sold like online flash sales and a handful of European carriers will be offering special SIM bundles to early adopters.

Ubuntu Phone Specifications

On paper, the specifications of the first ubuntu phone looks amazing. The phone packs 1.3GHz quad-core MediaTek processor coupled with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage. For snapping pictures, Aquarius E4.5 Ubuntu Edition has got 8-megapixel rear camera and 5-megapixel snapper in the front. It also sports an impressive full HD (1080p) resolution display.

The development of the open-source Ubuntu OS is being led by the company named Canonical.

The phone being offered by Ubuntu is a repurposed version of its Aquaris E4.5, a mid-range smartphone that normally ships with Android.

"We are going for the mass market," Cristian Parrino, VP of Mobile at Canonical says. "But that's a gradual process and a thoughtful process. That's something we're going to be doing intelligently over time -- but we'll get there."
