Jacksonville Jaguars Update: Doug Marrone Hired as an Assistant Head Coach
Doug Marrone's latest job might not be what he expected. According to multiple sources, the Jacksonville Jaguars has hired Marrone as the team's assistant head coach/offensive line coach.
Marrone held the head coach position with the Buffalo Bills before he decided to opt out of his contract. Due to a provision in his deal, Marrone would still be able to earn his 2015 salary worth $4 million promised by the Bills regardless of any new contracts.
After Marrone's shocking departure, he interviewed with several teams, which included the New York Jets, the Atlanta Falcons and the Chicago Bears. However, a head coach position was never secured.
Now, Marrone is headed to Jacksonville, where he will have a lot of work to do. The Jaguars, with two rookies and two second-year players on the starting line, finished last in the league with 71 sacks allowed. The Jaguars have not hired an offensive coordinator yet.
Marrone spent two seasons with the Buffalo Bills going 15-17. The Bills finished 9-7 this past season, their best record since 2004. Prior to the Bills, Marrone was the head coach at Syracuse, where he went 24-25 from 2009-2012.
Marrone has also held other coaching positions within the NFL. In 2001, he was the tight ends/offensive line coach with the Titans. From 2002-2005, he was the offensive line coach for the Jets and from 2006-2008, Marrone was the offensive coordinator for the Saints.
