The dark secret behind the hangover was unveiled. Researchers revealed that the darker the color of the drinks, the more likely the level of the hangover the morning after. Alcohols which are darker in color indicates the higher level of congeners.

Congeners are substances of the preferred type of alcohol, ethanol, produced during fermentation. Actually, congeners are products of alcohol fermentation. According to Dr. Desmond Wai, that bourbon has 37 times more congeners than clear liquor vodka. Dr. Desmond Wai is a gastroenterologist at Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital. Dr. Wai suggested opting for light-colored drinks, white wine over red wine, or gin over whiskey.

Hangover isn't easy to avoid, at least the drinkers can keep an average of one drink an hour. The doctor revealed that the liver is simply able to break down half an ounce of alcohol. To estimate it, scientifically it is one drink per hour. Excess alcohol is dispersed within the body until the liver has the ability to process it. A hangover peaks only after the alcohol is entirely eliminated from the blood streams.

The Health Promotion Board confirmed that a standard alcoholic drink is a 175ml glass of wine or a 35ml nip of spirit and a 330ml can of regular beer. Hangover symptoms are the usual mixture of a splitting headache, nausea, food loathing and that general feeling of dejection. Another result of the hangover is dehydration. Alcohol combined with the secretion of the hormone that increases the process of urination.

Hangover affects brain function and concentration. Alcohol increases the levels of inflammation markers in the body. To prevent the hangover, up on water in between drinks helps to dilute the alcohol in the blood streams. Antacids and paracetamol can help for headaches and gastric pain caused by alcohol.

Loading up on fluids for the dehydrated body and eating to avoid low blood sugar. However, the best solution is avoiding drinking too much alcohol.  Doctors requested drinkers minimize the alcohol consumption.
