‘True Detective’ Latest News: Season 3 Could Star Matthew McConaughey Again! 'Sing' Actor Misses Rust Cohle
Not much has been revealed about the third season of HBO's "True Detective" yet, though speculations are rampant about Season 3 already. Now, it turns out that Matthew McConaughey is willing to reprise his role as Rustin "Rust" Cohle in the series if given the chance.
McConaughey revealed his willingness to return to "True Detective" Season 3 during an interview on "The Rich Eisen Show" on Friday. However, the "Sing" actor also stressed that the "ball's not advanced at all," adding that he had discussed matters with "True Detective" creator Nic Pizzolatto who's "taking a little break" from the series, Entertainment Weekly reported.
"If that thing was written well and it came up again, I wouldn't hesitate for a second," McConaughey said of his potential return to "True Detective" Season 3, as quoted by EW. "Oh, I'm open to it for sure." Watch McConaughey's interview below.
This was not the first time that the 47-year-old actor expressed his desire to come back to "True Detective." In June, McConaughey shared that he misses playing and watching Rust on TV. He revealed that taking on Rust for six months made him "a happy man" because he was on his "own island," according to a separate report from EW.
McConaughey thinks highly of the Rust character. He said that in just 20 minutes of reading the script for "True Detective" Season 1, he knew that he wanted to portray Rust despite originally gunning for the Marty role, which eventually went to Woody Harrelson. According to McConaughey, Rust "really speaks" to him and he can't wait to "hear what comes out of his mouth."

McConaughey's portrayal of Rust and the show's debut season earned positive reviews from critics. The second season of "True Detective," which starred Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, and Vince Vaughn, didn't receive the same praise.
It remains to be seen whether or not McConaughey would return to "True Detective" Season 3 as Rust. What fans can do for now is to wait for an official announcement from the show's team.
HBO programming chief Casey Bloys said in November that "True Detective" creator Nic Pizzolatto is still "thinking about what the best-next version" of the series, EW reported.
