Lucid Air Might Give Tesla A Run For Its Money
Lucid Air could be the next luxury high-tech car to contend with and might just give Tesla a run for its money. This technology-packed sedan retails at $160,000 and users could easily imagine they're on "a private jet on four wheels". This according to Lucid chief tech officer Peter Rawlinson as he met with reporters.
Lucid Air is now taking deposits. One must be ready to dole out $2,500 for an edition that would be priced starting around $100,000 and a whooping deposit of $25,000 for the $160,000 Launch Edition. The latter has independent dual back seats that recline almost fully, the way that first-class plane seating does. The company plans to offer a version at $65,000 in the future.
Other amazing features include twin engine motors at the front and rear that when combined can produce a up to 1,000 horsepower. It has different arrays of Lidar, radar and cameras in order to make autonomous driving possible. It also has a range of 300 miles which can shoot up to 400 if the user chooses to.
Right now Lucid has a production target of 10,000 vehicles. In three to four years they expect to ramp it up to 60,000, said Zak Edson, head of marketing. The question now is if it's capable of making enough money while it is still acquiring scale. In the past Tesla has struggled to make a profit despite it's Model S and X sedans' popularity, which were often priced out at $100,000. Tesla manufactures around 50,000 cars annually. It hopes to gain profitability by boosting its production ten times with the entry of its level Model 3 per USA Today.
And Edson has nothing but high hopes about their new vehicle. He said they have a strong cost model for their car. This includes their battery supplier Samsung as well as some of their parts coming from Sonora. But in the end, they are not going out to compete with Tesla, but to compete with all the top luxury manufacturers, including Audi and Mercedes-Benz. He thinks there's room for all of them.
