Grammy 2017 Nominations News: Beyonce Country Song 'Daddy Lessons' Rejected; How Grammy Winners Are Chosen
Beyonce's song "Daddy Lessons" was rejected by the Recording Academy music committee after being included in the "Lemonade" album slate for the country category. The news comes after the announcement that Queen B earned a record breaking 9 Grammy nominations. While she was included in different categories, Country wasn't one of them.
According to Associated Press, "a person familiar with the Grammy nomination process" said that Beyonce submitted a country song "Daddy Lessons" for the country category. But, Recording Academy music committee rebuffed the song. If Beyonce had been successfully included in the category, she would have been qualified for even more nominations including best country solo performance and best country song.
Grammy awards nomination process usually starts with the submission of songs by Recording Academy committee and recording companies. After which, the chosen songs are screened by over 350 experts in different music genre including Latin, New Age, R&B, Rock, and in this case, Country to ensure that entries are qualified for the category.
Then the nomination starts with chosing voting members with expertise in their respective genre. Members are allowed to vote in 15 genre categories and General Field including Album Of The Year, Best New Artist, Record Of The Year, and Song Of The Year.
The ballots are then collated by the Deloitte accounting firm. Another round of final voting will then be carried out with the same process as the initial voting. Then, the results of the Grammy Awards are processed, but won't be revealed until the actual Grammy Awards telecast.
The Beyonce track, "Daddy Lessons", from her album "Lemonade" received a debacle among country artists who believe that the song doesn't belong to the country genre. In a Washington Post report, writer Alison Bonaguro said that the song is "no more country" than "Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)" song. In contrast, Bentley reportedly said that the lyrics have a country "feel" to it. Taste of Country also seems to think that while "Daddy Lessons" is not a traditional country song, it would not be unsuitable if played on a country radio.
Nevertheless, Beyonce still has nine Grammy nominations in R&B, Rock, Pop, and Hip-Hop categories. Beyonce and the Recording Academy music committee have yet to comment on the news.
