Amazon Introduces "Amazon Go"; A Technology That Will Surprise Grocery Shoppers In 2017; Details Here
Amazon is now putting to the test a grocery store in Seattle, that lets shoppers enter the store, get any food they want, and just walks out again without any hassle paying and standing in line at the cashier. The customers will simply tap their smartphones on a turnstile as they enter the store, which will enable the store's network to log them and after, links to their Amazon account through an app.
A new video was released by Amazon promoting their new technology quoting, "Four years ago we started to wonder: what would shopping be like if you could just walk into a store, grab what you wanted, and just go." The service is named as Amazon Go. They called the technology as "Just Walk Out", which Amazon explained the innovation as "computer vision, deep learning algorithms, and sensor fusion much like a self-driving vehicle".
Amazon uses machine learning, sensor, and artificial intelligence to distinguish the items that customers pick up. The items are after added to the virtual cart that's downloaded to their phones. In addition to that, if customers decide that they don't want the item and by putting it back on the shelf, it also automatically removes it from their cart.
The Amazon Go store in Seattle as for the moment, is exclusively available only to Amazon employees, but is rumored to open to the public early next year. Customers will need to download the Amazon Go App first and swipe their phone before entering the said store. Amazon also aims to construct 2,000 grocery stores nationwide within the next decade.
The company reported that they began working on the project in 2012. It's located at 2131 7th Ave, in Seattle near Amazon's offices. Amazon provides delicious ready-to-eat-breakfast, lunch, dinner and much more. Snack options are also offered made fresh every day by their on-site chefs, bakeries, and local kitchens.
