Brad Pitt's new movie "Allied" only earned $18 million over the five-day period. This figure is considered a weak result by Hollywood standards due to its $85 million budget. Now, the media is having a field day whether the box office performance of the World War II drama is an aftermath of Pitt's divorce from Angelina Jolie.

According to "Variety" magazine, tabloid gossips may have affected the box-office performance of "Allied". The past six months have put Brad Pitt in a bad spotlight as the one who cheated on the "Maleficent" star. It didn't help that the rumored third-party is his co-star Marion Cotillard.

For die-hard fans of the Brangelina tandem, the divorce between Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie came unexpected. To those who have remained loyal to the aggrieved party, Jolie, their ire turned to the heartbreaker, Pitt, whom they will punish at all cost. The movie "Allied" is a perfect platform for Angie fans to begin they revenge against Brad.

"Time" magazine took notice of the apparent similarities between "Allied" and the 2005 romantic thriller "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" - the movie where Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie famously fell in love. The two movies' plots center on a couple who happen to be spies. In "Allied," Pitt is a Canadian intelligence officer while Cotillard is a Nazy spy.

"Allied" received an above average rating from critics. "Variety's" Owen Gleiberman praises the film's supple and nearly invisible craft that allows emotional suspense in every scene. "The New York Times'" A.O. Scott considers the Brad Pitt starred as a reminder of the deep pleasures of old-fashioned technique and long experience.

If "Allied" has been released in the 90s, it could have topped the box office charts. Its failure to draw bigger crowds can be blamed to its dated formula and Brad Pitt's maligned public image after his divorce from Angelina Jolie.
