Sony is offering extended memberships and an upcoming one-time discount to its PayStation users to make up for the distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack that took down Sony's online service on Christmas Day.

"Since access to PlayStation Network was impacted during the holidays, we wanted to show our appreciation for your patience," said a Sony's blog post.

PlayStation users who had an active PlayStation Plus membership or free trial as of Dec25 will automatically have their subscription extended by five days. PlayStation Plus which costs $50 a year and $10 a month also provides regular discounts and free games to PlayStation owners.

PlayStation owners will also be offered one-time-use discount that will allow shoppers to receive 10 percent off of their entire cart purchase on the PlayStation Store. The purchases can be digital games, downloadable content, movies and TV shows.

The above mentioned offers/discounts are expected to arrive "sometime this month."

On Christmas last year, PlayStation Network and Xbox Live were taken offline by a DDoS attack. The responsibility of the attack was taken by Lizard Squad.
