New York Jets Start Rebuilding, Fire Rex Ryan and John Idzik
The New York Jets have parted ways with head coach, Rex Ryan and general manager, John Idzik. The Jets were 4-12 this season.
"After extensive thought and reflection about the current state of our football team, this morning I informed Rex Ryan and John Idzik that they will not be returning for the 2015 season," Jets owner Woody Johnson said in a statement. "Both Rex and John made significant contributions to the team, and they have my appreciation and gratitude for their efforts and commitment.
Ryan spent six years coaching the Jets. He had a 50-52 record, including the postseason. During his first two seasons, Ryan led the team to consecutive AFC Championship Games. Since then, however, the Jets were unable to develop and strengthen their roster. They failed to make it to the postseason for the four years in a year. This season was the Jets' worst since 2007.
"Over the years, Rex brought the Jets a bold confidence and a couple of great post-season runs, which all of us will remember," Idzik added.
Idzik, who joined the Jets in 2013, has been criticized for how he constructed the roster as well as the decisions he made during the NFL draft and in free agency. Idzik failed to used the team's salary to acquire vital players such as a cornerback and a wide receiver. The Jets record under Idzik's management is 12-20.
"Getting the Jets back on track is my top priority, and today's decisions are important steps towards achieving our goals,' Johnson said.
Ryan will most likely be a coaching candidate for other teams. He could also be offered broadcasting positions.
