Invisible as the First Episodic Drama Shot in Full Virtual Reality - Check how they did it!
Invisible is about a wealthy and powerful family named Ashland's that possess the power of invisibility passed down to the following generations. When the Ashland's leader died, he granted the family's lucrative company to Tatiana which pissed off her great uncle Gordon whose menacing his plot to artificially create himself the power of invisibility. Invisible will keep you hanging on the edge of your seat. What's more? They shot it in Full Virtual Reality.
Doug Liman, one of the most sought out director, and creator of Edge of Tomorrow, and The Bourne Identity set out his first shot with Invisible on Full Virtual Reality Mode. The episodic drama requires a VR headset like Oculus Rift or HTC Vive to view.
With a VR strapped on your face, your free to look around and focus on the things you want, which makes Invisible much exciting. There are multiple conversations and fight scenes and it's up to the viewers where to look. But, there are challenges in creating this film. Some speculation states that since the VR Technology's resolution is limited and the infrequency of cuts can make Invisible some sort of an old school soap opera.
"I knew the challenges would be great -- that to bring that kind of story to life in VR really was going to test the boundaries of what was doable in scripted VR," said Liman on IGN.
"It was going to be fast-paced at a time when people were saying you can't edit in VR -- we were going to have to figure out a way to prove those people wrong. And it was going to involve action," Liman continued. "The tricks that Hollywood's developed over the last 100 years don't really work in VR ... you can cheat in action and, you know, shake the camera a little bit and you don't quite see what's happening, but your mind fills in the gap. You can't do that in VR. You can't even fake a stage hit in VR. You know, if someone's going to get hit they actually have to be hit."
Invisible is now available for Samsung's Gear VR, Oculus Rift, and HTC Vive.
