Rare Black Seal Is Victim Of Racist Attack
Some seals are more unequal than others! There is one black seal pup called Badger, who was beaten, bullied and then neglected by its family and other seals.
Found with an ulcerated eye and scar wounds, the two-week old pup was thought to be attacked by other seals due to its different appearance, according to Daily Mail.
Who said that racism exists only among humans? There are many shades to this colour prejudice that are unknown and unexamined.
Discovered on the Scilly Isles, the pup is recovering at Cornish Seal Sanctuary in Gweek. Tamara Cooper, the sanctuary's animal care team supervisor, said: "When he arrived he had an infection and was struggling to feed himself." Only with care and affection, he seems to be on the road to recovery.
As he seemed most disturbed, the team put him on antibiotics and lots of care and love. That was when he got cured, so the team, which has chosen names based on superheroes for all the rescued pups, called him by an unusual name. 'Badger' seemed to be a good choice, according to nyooztrend.com.
Black seal pups are a rarity. The most common seal pups may be white or grey. Badger, on the other hand, was different. He was clicked when he was healing at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary. Initially, he was brown, but after moulting, he was discovered to be inky black. The rare black pup are usually found only in other places.
"Black pups are very rare, and more usually found among the Scottish population. We haven't had a Black Pup since 2007," says Tamara.
The rarity of the find makes Badger loved. Though he is still cared for, he has been shifted from the intensive care section into the nursery pools. Being able to feed himself, he could go back to life in the wilds by March next year.
Hopefully he will be accepted by his peers and not face any more racist attacks!
