Screenshots of much-awaited WhatsApp free voice calling feature has been leaked. If the screenshots are based on real evidence, the launch of the feature might be closer.

The leaked screenshots show the latest builds of the app for Android. WhatsApp distributes two main builds for Android - one less updated version on Google Play Store and an updated one on its website. The latest build might has the hidden technology for voice calling feature, probably being used for testing purposes.

The alleged screenshots of a build that offers WhatsApp calling feature were published by androidworld.nl.

According to the screenshots, the voice calling function might be separate from the main chat functionality, as screenshots hint a different screen for dialing, call logs and contacts.

WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum had confirmed in October that a voice calling feature was in the works but added that its release might be delayed till Q1 2015. He further mentioned that the company has several technical issues to overcome before the feature is made public.

Koum also noted that the WhatsApp development team is exploring ways to provide a stable connection for voice calls in areas that has poor data coverage, as a considerable amount of WhatsApp users reside in areas where only 2G networks exist.
