League of Legends Goes Tabletop with Mechs vs Minions
Three years in the making, Mechs vs Minions debuts on October 13, following four Yordles in their fight against mechs gone wrong.
According to Kotaku, League of Legends champion Rumble invites fellow Yordles Corki, Heimerdinger, Tristana and Ziggs to his mech training school. A little bit of this and that, then the four invited champions find themselves in situations that champions are wont to be in: the destruction of the world, Runeterra. Play the game to find out whether they succeed in their defense. That and Yordles are adorable.
The tabletop game was conceptualized by a small led by Chris Cantrell. The release was initially slated for a year and a half ago, but Polygon reports that an outside consultant managed to make them refocus the idea, and out came the board game we see now another year and a half later.
Cantrell himself is predisposed to board games, having over 1200 in his own personal collection. That said, there's a certain expectation gamer would have as to the quality of the final product, especially with someone who's so enamored with the industry at the head. It can only mean good things, in the long run.
Initial prototypes of the game seemed to be fun, but low points on replayability. Still, it had good points from the get go with critic Tom Vasal giving it a veritable thumbs up.
The main direction change seems to come from the modular game board Mechs vs Minions now sports, making replayability better as the terrain changes every playthrough. That said, modes themselves mean more work for the designers and such, and that's where the extra time needed to actually make the game comes in.
The gameplay itself is exciting, with permutations abounding due to the modular implementation and that the point is, according to Cantrell, is "trying to make the best of what will nearly always be a chaotic situation."
