Cast Revealed for Death Note 2016 and Netflix Film Remake of Death Note
Staff of Death Note's 2016 movie, Death Note Light up the NEW World, have released information on new characters to whet fans' appetites, according to Anime News Network. The film is set in 2016, with successors who "inherited the DNA" of Light and L (played by Tatsuya Fujiwara and Kenichi Matsuyama respectively in the 2006 live-action films) living in a highly advanced society plagued by global cyber-terrorists. These successors will battle it out for the six Death Notes on Earth.
Unveiled in September 1, new characters to look out for are: Yuki Shien (Masaki Suda), a cyber terrorist who idolizes Light; Ryuzaki (Sousuke Ikematsu), a world famous detective and L's successor; Tsukuru Mishima (Masahiro Higashide), one of the Death Note Task Force investigators; and Sakura Aoi (Rina Kawaei), an indiscriminate killer and Death Note user.
Erika Toda will be reprising her role as Misa Amane, a famous model in love with Light. Shidou Nakamura will also be reprising his role as the voice of Ryuk, Light's shinigami.
According to The Asahi Shimbun, the story begins with Mishima and Ryuzaki confiscate one of the Death Notes. After this, they learn from a shinigami that six Death Notes have been brought to Earth.
They also learn about the "Six-Note Rule", which says that only six of the deadly notebooks can exist at a time in the human world. This rule will be a crucial plot element of the new film and has existed in the original manga, but was never explored in other media adaptations.
Death Note Light up the New World is set to air in Japan on October 29 this year.
Based on a supernatural suspense manga written by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata, Death Note has inspired anime adaptations, tie-in specials, and live-action films and series. The popular franchise has also been picked up by Netflix, which announced earlier in June this year that it is planning to release a live-action film remake of the franchise in 2017, as per Anime News Network.
The cast includes Nat Wolff as Light, Keith Stanford as L, Margaret Qualley as Mia Sutton, and Paul Nakauchi as Watari. According to Mashable, Ryuk will be voiced by award-winning actor Willem Dafoe. Producers of the film include Roy Lee, Dan Lin, Jason Hoffs, and Masi Oka.
