Samsung Galaxy S8 Release Date: Galaxy S8 already revealed?

Samsung recently demoed an impressive 5.5-inch 4K UHD display and that AMOLED screen could make its way to next year's Galaxy S8, according to a new report says. At that size most users won't be able to tell the difference between a 4K and a 2K display, but such a high-resolution screen might have a different purpose: virtual reality.

According to The Korea Herald, a well-known market research firm believes that the Galaxy S8 is getting Samsung's best mobile display yet. Well, this is hardly debatable due to the fact that every Samsung flagship for the respective year has the best display in the entire smartphone market irrespective of platforms and this makes it a marketing gain for them to actually sell more units than estimated.

A UBI research analyst said that Samsung Display showcased a 5.5 ultra-high definition 4K display with a pixel density of 806 ppi for virtual reality devices at the Society for Information Display, a display trade show, in California in March. "Considering various factors including the production yield rate for the next-generation display expected to improve in the coming months, the 5.5-inch AMOLED will be deployed in the next Galaxy smartphone, presumably, named the S8."

Samsung is very interested in mobile virtual reality and Google also made an interesting bet on Android-based VR at Google I/O 2016. It would be more than reasonable to assume that Samsung's 2017 flagships would pack the required components - screen included - to support even better VR content. From a different point of view, more and more rumors suggest that Apple is going to launch at least one iPhone model with an AMOLED screen next year, with Samsung being one of the suppliers named in reports. It'll be interesting to see whether Apple also chooses to equip that upcoming iPhone 7s/8 model with a 4K screen. Of note, this new report doesn't mention anything about Apple's iPhone plans for next year.
