8 Movies To Watch In June, 2016

In a couple of days as June hits the calendar, new movies will hit theaters. BBC Culture has picked eight movies for June including 'Finding Nemo' and 'Independence Day.'

1.   Free State of Jones

American war film inspired by the life of Newton Knight and his armed rebellion against the Confederacy in Jones County, Mississippi during the American Civil War.

The film is written and directed by Gary Ross, starring Matthew McConaughey, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Mahershala Ali, Keri Russell and Brendan Gleeson.

Release Date: June 24, 2016 in U.S.

2.   The Neon Demon

An internationally co-produced horror thriller film directed by Nicolas Winding Refn and co-written by Mary Laws and Refn and starring Elle Fanning.

The plot follows an aspiring model in Los Angeles whose beauty and youth place her in significant danger amongst the women she becomes associated with in the industry.

3.   Finding Dory 

American 3D computer-animated comedy adventure film produced by Pixar Animation Studiosand released by Walt Disney Pictures.

The film is the sequel to the 2003 film Finding Nemo. Andrew Stanton, who directed the original film, will return as writer and director alongside Angus MacLane as the co-director.

4.   Independence Day: Resurgence 

 American science fiction disaster film directed by Roland Emmerich, and written by Emmerich and Dean Devlin. It is the sequel to the 1996 film Independence Day.

The film stars Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox and Brent Spiner, reprising their original roles, along with newcomers Liam Hemsworth, Jessie Usher, Maika Monroe, Sela Ward, Angelababy, Charlotte Gainsbourg and William Fichtner.

Release Date: June 24, 2016 in 2D ,RealD 3D and IMAX 3D

5.   The BFG

American fantasy adventure film directed and co-produced by Steven Spielberg, from a screenplay by Melissa Mathison, and based on the novel of the same name by Roald Dahl and the original British 1989 adaptation.

The film stars English actor Mark Rylance as the Big Friendly Giant, an elderly giant who kidnaps the orphan Sophie, played by Ruby Barnhill, as to accompany his loneliness and to help him on a mission in Giant Country. Penelope Wilton, Jemaine Clement, Rebecca Hall, Rafe Spall and Bill Hader are featured in supporting performances.

6.   Genius

British-American biographical drama film directed by Michael Grandage and written by John Logan, based on the 1978 National Book Award-winner Max Perkins: Editor of Genius by A. Scott Berg.

The film stars Colin Firth, Jude Law, Nicole Kidman, Dominic West and Guy Pearce. It was selected to compete for the Golden Bear at the 66th Berlin International Film Festival

7.    The Shallows

 American survival horror thriller film directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and written by Anthony Jaswinski.

The film stars Blake Lively and Óscar Jaenada. Principal photography began on October 28, 2015 in New South Wales, Australia.

Release Date: June 29, 2016 by Columbia Pictures.

8.   From Afar

A middle-aged man searches for young men in Caracas and pays them for company. When he meets a 17-year-old leader of a criminal gang, both of their lives are changed forever.

The movie is directed by Lorenzo Vigas and the executive producers are Édgar Ramírez, Gabriel Ripstein.

The film stars are Alfredo Castro, Jericó Montilla, Luis Silva and more.
