WWE News and Rumors: John Cena Hosting the 2016 ESPYS
The requirements of WWE superstardom is not just confined in the ring. Apparently, it glory and honor comes with a tacit recognition that fame should also be positive force to promote the greater good. That's exactly what WWE megastar John Cena realized when he accepted the invitation to become the host of the 2016 ESPYS in the middle of July.
The pro wrestling world's poster boy made the announcement on Twitter about the said event scheduled to take place on July 13 in Los Angeles. So far, there is no other mainstream name in WWE's current roster of professional wrestlers who could come close to John Cena's achievements. Of course, The Rock can also lay claim to such fame but Cena just made pro wrestling a seemingly an integral part of American popular culture. Right now, as the face of WWE's corporate social responsibility, Cena is also benefitting from WWE's newfound relationship with ESPN in a very significant way.
The immensely popular and 15-time WWE World Heavyweight champion is the currently the third host who hailed from the sports world. Ex-Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong was the first to have been given such honor followed by Cleveland Cavaliers star and LeBron James who co-hosted the award show with Jimmy Kimmel 9 years ago.
"They asked, and of course I said yes," said Cena as quoted by ESPN. "It goes without saying it's a tremendous honor. The prestige of the show grows every year. It's unbelievable. I obviously accepted, but it doesn't go without its share of nerves. I just want to do the show justice. I'm going to do my due diligence and hopefully we can have a great show."
Meanwhile, Cena's return to the ring has been recently confirmed. According to a report by Sportskeeda, the champ is slated to team up with Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose against AJ Styles, Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows in a highly advertised match on May 30's Monday Night Raw.
Cena has been conspicuously absent from the matches since last year following a series of injuries that required months of recuperation. He made a cameo appearance at WrestleMania 32 where he helped The Rock stave off an attack by the Wyatts.
