Instagram’s Logo Makeover Leaves Followers Unhappy

For many people, Instagram's logo change was touted as one of the "biggest design fails" of this year. The company changed the cute camera icon that became instantly recognizable as the social media app. However, the app developers feel that the old logo has aged well and it was time to repurpose it into new design and interface. Ian Spalter, Instagram design head, said that the old logo "beginning to feel, well... not reflective of the community, and we thought we could make it better."

In a recent report, Instagram explained that they wanted to have a modern logo, something that was a "brighter, flatter option." Thus the company developed this new design, the rainbow colored logo, which is a far cry from the old one.

According to Alexis Anais Avedision, aesthetics researcher, "The new Instagram logo means the brand is done promoting nostalgia for analog and is instead embracing 'the digital' aka 2012 net art aesthetic," Avedision added.

It has also been mentioned in other news reports that Instagram dropped the "nostalgia era" with this new logo design which the application previously represented. Now the company wants to move on to something much simpler, like a black and white interface.

"The most difficult part was once you decide to move on from a beloved icon, how far do you go?" Spalter said in a BGR report. "A lot of the process was figuring what to keep and let go. Are you evolving far enough or not enough, so that you'll just end up revisiting it in a year?"

He also added that he is ready to take his time off when the criticism for the new logo begins!
