Iowa Woman Gives Birth In Hospital Bathroom, Tries To Flush Baby And Leaves It In Trash Can
A disgusting activity was perpetrated by an Iowa woman on Sunday. She is reported to have delivered a baby and then tried to flush it down the toilet. After that, she tossed it into a trash can.
The 22-year-old Ashley R. Hautzenrader was arrested after the police caught and charged her with child endangerment.
On Sunday, Hautzenrader went into a bathroom at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics before 9:30 p.m. and delivered a baby, said the police. She said that she was not aware of having been pregnant before she delivered. She thought it was a stillbirth, as the baby was not crying. It made her try to flush it down the toilet.
She could not flush it, so she put it in a pillowcase and left it in a trash can, after which she cleaned the bathroom and left. UHC employees later found the baby in the trash can.
They alerted the police who talked to Hautzenrader. She said that she had abandoned the baby in the trash can because she had believed that it had died.
Federal patient privacy laws do not reveal how the baby is, and what its gender is. But the question that is doing the rounds is: If Hautzenrader was not aware of her pregnancy, why did she go to the hospital in the first place?
Hautzenrader was charged with child endangerment that can get her up to two years in prison. She has been shifted from the Johnson County Jail to the Iowa Department of Corrections for pretrial supervision.
