Opera comes out with a new VPN app for iOS
So Opera says it's our turn now after all. Opera about a couple of weeks back introduced a free and unlimited virtual private network? VPN! Only for its browsers back then. But now seems like they want to go ahead a step, so they introduced the same to iOs in the form of their own app. This was launched on Monday and would still continue serving unlimited usage.
Officially called Opera VPN, the app allows users to securely browse and view content that may otherwise be restricted, due to their location or other restrictions. But don't use NetFlix or Hulu. They will boot you out and even terminate your usage with them since both of them have strict georestriction laws.
Like other VPNs Opera's app also allows you to mask your true location by fetching an IP address from another location. As of now, you can fetch IPs for you from five different regions. The US, Canada, Germany, Singapore and the Netherlands are those five currently serving the VPN. However, Opera plans to increase their location presence to a broader range. Beneficial factor for the Opera VPN is it also blocks ad-tracking cookies and has an ad-blocker built in. However, Opera's inception is unusual since it's totally free. There are absolutely no in-app purchases present yet and not even subscriptions. Heck there are no ads too.
Though the app doesn't currently have advertising, the company did explain that it likely will use advertising in the future because, as the company explains rather bluntly, "the reality is that a VPN service costs money to operate". "While we don't offer this today, we will likely introduce advertising into the application in the future. This is just the same as playing a free game that has ads - we get paid by advertisers based on our users' engagement with their ads," Chris Houston, president of Opera's VPN division, writes in a blog post.
