Keeping the promise to provide Ultra High-def content to its subscribers, Amazon has announced that it will provide movies and TV shows in 4K. Any Prime subscriber that has a 4K smart TV from selected brands will be able to enjoy the upgraded experience.

4K video is also known as Ultra HD. It offers four times as many pixels as standard HD making images extremely clear.

"We want to deliver the best entertainment experience, and offering Ultra HD movies and TV shows raises the bar on quality and innovation that customers have come to expect from Amazon," said Michael Paull, vice president for Amazon Digital Video. "We're also excited that Ultra HD is the latest benefit of the Amazon Prime membership, giving members instant access to great movies and TV shows in a premium picture resolution at no additional cost."

Earlier, Netflix had introduced the 4K video streaming to its subscribers, costing $3 more per month than its standard streaming subscription. However, unlike Netflix, Amazon Prime subscribers need not pay any extra amount.

Non-prime subscribers can also buy 4K movies from Amazon, however the selection is quite limited at the moment.

Vimeo also announced 4K services allowing PRO members to upload 4K video files and On Demand sellers to enable 4K file downloads.

"Creators have been able to upload in 4K for some time, but now these files can be downloaded and played on those fancy, 4K-compatible displays some of us are lucky enough to own," Vimeo noted in a blog post.

"And while we don't yet offer 4K streaming on our site, we'll be ready by the time broadband providers start widely supporting the high speeds required."
