Toho Studios, the Japanese studio that first released a Godzilla movie in 1954, announced Monday that it will revive the original "Gojira" and unleash it on the world in 2016.

Toho confirmed that the 28th installment of the 60-year-old film franchise will be starting production soon. They last released a "Godzilla" film in 2004 but after the movie received a cold reaction from the audience, they shelved the franchise.

However, the success of Hollywood's latest rendition of "Godzilla" by Gareth Edwards drove Toho to announce a comeback. The studios also said that technological advancements was one of the main reasons for the announcement.

"The time has come for Japan to make a film that will not lose to Hollywood," producer Taichi Ueda told MTV adding that Toho's new Godzilla "will represent Japan and be loved around the world."

Toho Studios has been using hi-tech computer graphics for all its sci-fi movies of late and therefore, trying the effects on one the world's oldest and most popular monsters was only natural. It didn't confirm if it will use those techniques for the fim though.

The studios also announced that it will be forming a board of associates and executives that will keep brand "Godzilla" alive. Toho Studios also confirmed that they will be commissioning a statue of Godzilla at the Toho Cinemas Shinjuku Theater in April 2015.
