Facebook Apologizes for Satety Check System Glitch After Pakistan Bombing

When Taliban bombing at a crowded park in the city of Lahore happened which killed 70 people and injured more than 300, Facebook's Safety Check made an error by sending notification to users as far away as the U.S. and the U.K.

Facebook's Safety Check system sends notification after a dangerous events to help people let others know they are safe.

Today Facebook apologized for the error that made people very confusing and worried.

"We activated Safety Check today in Lahore, Pakistan, after an explosion that took place there. We hope the people in the area of the bombing find Safety Check a useful and helpful way to let their friends and family know they are okay," Facebook wrote on its Disaster Response on Facebook page. "Unfortunately, many people not affected by the crisis received a notification asking if they were okay. This kind of bug is counter to our intent. We worked quickly to resolve the issue and we apologize to anyone who mistakenly received the notification."

Facebook noted that in 2015 more than 950 million people got a notification that a friend was safe through Safety Check Function. Facebook first launched its Safety Check feature in 2014.

Safety Check was initially made for use after natural disasters but now it's also used for terror attacks after Paris.
