Sony's VR Headset: "Is it worth its Price?"

Since early January Sony's valuation has climbed to its highest level after unveiling a virtual-reality headset priced significantly below rival devices, fueling investor optimism about the Japanese company's foray into next-generation gaming.

Priced at $399 the Playstation VR will go on sale this October. The price being almost half of that the price tag on the $799 HTC Vive, developed by HTC and game publisher Valve. Oculus Rift by Facebook priced it at $599. They require high-end computers to run though those headsets may offer higher quality graphics. In contrast, about 36m people who own a playstation 4 can enjoy the affordable VR headset.

Damian Thong, an analyst at Macquarie Group in Tokyo said that the price was really compelling and aiming for mainstream market share was the key for VR success. Adding to the above he also mentioned that Sony probably thinks of PlayStation VR as a broader ecosystem push, something that not only will sell more PS4s, but an upgrade to PS5 will also be encouraged in the future.

The Tokyo based company mentioned that more than 50 games would be running off Sony's system by the end of the year. Electronic Arts is making a version of Star Wars Battlefront for the headset, although Sony declined to say whether that game would be among those coming out this year.

Marking the beginning of a new commercial era for virtual-reality gaming Oculus Rift headsets begin shipping to consumers on March 28. A powerful personal computer is required to use the powerful headsets that can cost more than $1,000. According to Nvidia, the largest maker of computer-graphics chips, there are only about 13m computers worldwide that have the required capabilities.
