Luna, A German Shepherd-Husky Mix Was Lost At Sea For Five Weeks, But Returned Healthy

Every dog has her day, as Luna, a year-and-a-half old, has discovered. Five weeks ago, suddenly, the blue-eyed German shepherd/husky mix was lost in San Clemente Island, near San Diego.

"One moment Luna was there and the next she was gone," her owner, Nick Haworth said at the time.

She had fallen overboard from a fishing boat near the coast of Southern California. Calling a nearby island naval base, Haworth reported the fall and informed officials that he thought Luna might try to make it to the land.

For a couple of days, he searched for her, but 20.-year-old Haworth had to finally give up.

"RIP Luna, you will be greatly missed," he wrote in a Facebook post.

Even the local navy crews searched the land and sea thoroughly, but they found nothing.

Finally, just when everyone had given up, she came back. Five weeks after she had got lost, she was found near the island's main road. When she spotted naval staffers, she ran ashore.

"They were shocked," Naval Base Coronado PAO Sandy DeMunnik said.

DeMunnik said Luna was examined by a Navy wildlife biologist, who said that she seemed malnourished, yet healthy and unharmed otherwise. The pup was in "good spirits."

A special label has been pinned on Luna by the Naval Air Base Commander Stephen Barnett: "For Luna, keep the faith."

Haworth was out of town, but he is just waiting to return and reunite with her.

"He's ecstatic," Haworth's friend Conner Lamb said. He had gone to pick up the pup and had a joyful reunion.

"(It's) just really mind blowing to tell you the truth," he said. "When I got the call this happened, (I) never even thought this would be possible."
