After bits of plastic were found in one of its chocolate bars in Germany, Mars has recalled its chocolates in several European countries.

According to BBC, the recall was initially announced in Germany but later expanded to Italy, France, UK and Spain. The recall reportedly applied to 55 countries but the company did not detail the number of products recalled and the financial impact of the move.

"The affected bars were produced in the Netherlands and from there ... distributed to several European countries," said company's German spokesperson Raoul Hamacher, NBC News reports.

The products recalled include Mars, Snickers, Milky Way Minis and Celebration Boxes with best before dates from 19 June 2016 to 8 January 2017. The products were made towards the end of last year.

The Guardian reports the recall affects those products made in Netherlands as the bar with plastic bits was produced in the company's Dutch factory.

Eline Bijveld, Mars representative in Netherlands told The Guardian that an investigation is underway but the company cannot tell if plastic pieces are not present in other bars from the Dutch production facility in Veghel.

The company said its recall was out of abundance of precaution and through the recall it hopes to prevent consumers who may have purchased an affected bar from consuming them.
