Amazon Resets Users' Passwords Denies Security Breach

In a move performed out of 'abundance of caution', Amazon reset some of its users' passwords due to a possible data breach.

According to USA Today, users received emails providing temporary passwords while stating that the passwords had been reset. The message was also received when users logged in to change their temporary passwords.

While maintaining there was no breach, the email reportedly told users that their passwords were either stored improperly or were transmitted in a manner with risk of exposure and the reset was a precaution, ZDNet reports. The online retailer further informed users that the issue has been corrected.

Though Amazon reportedly did not respond to enquiries, it is known that forced password resets are performed when a database is breached or if there is a threat of exposure.

Amazon recently bumped up its user security setup by introducing a two-step verification process. That however did not prevent the latest incident which comes just days before Black Friday sale begins.
