‘Supergirl’ Debuts Big on CBS, Scores New Record with 14 Million Views
"Supergirl," the first ever costumed superhero TV series that features a female lead, debuted to great numbers Monday night.
According to the data, the show, which stars Melissa Benoist as Supergirl, broke the record for fall new series with 14 million viewers tuning in. The show also received a 3.2 rating in the age group of 18-49.
"Supergirl's" success was most likely aided by CBS's hit show, "The Big Bang Theory," which recorded 15.9 million views and a 4.2 rating. On top of the prime TV spot, "Supergirl" has also been very well promoted by the network.
The new record dethroned "Life in Piece's" record, which totaled 11.3 million viewers. In terms of rating, it surpassed "Blindspot's" 3.1 rating.
"Supergirl" was also the second highest rated show on air Monday night after "The Big Bang Theory." The other shows, "Minority Report," "Blindspot" and "Dancing with the Stars" received 0.6, 2.2 and 1.9 ratings, respectively.
Prior to the premiere, the producers talked about the importance of casting the right actress for the show.
"One was the stress of making sure that we had the right Supergirl," executive producer Greg Berlanti explained in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. "These things are incredibly cast-dependent, and if we don't have that right person, you're done even before you start. So just the pressure of that, I think, was felt by everyone, on every level."
The other executive producer, Ali Adler, recalled when they casted Benoist.
"When we first saw her, she was exactly who we saw in our heads and our hearts ... and then we had to go through this extensive process of seeing other people and being in love with someone already. You start knowing her in your head and you start writing to her, and she's just a tremendous soul and we're so excited to bring her to everyone."
Benoist also spoke about what it felt like to finally wear the costume.
"That was a big-that was a really, really crazy feeling," she said to E! News. "It felt like anything else, it felt like just putting on tights and a leotard and then when I saw myself in the mirror-it's almost like a physical, internal change. I feel like a different person, I really do."
"Supergirl" airs on Mondays at 8:00 p.m. ET.
