Obama’s Health Service Losing Momentum
The significant gains of health care coverage may just be levelling off as per Obama Administration's latest announcement. They expect to see only a slight improvement in the enrollment following year. Now that the sign-up season for 2016 is only two weeks away, Sylvia Burwell, Health and Human Services Secretary set a 10 Million people target and will pay their premiums till the end of next year. These are all the people that are covered through the subsidized online health insurance scheme run by the government, reports Philly.com
As per Burwell, the task of insuring more people is becoming trickier by the day. The people that are left uninsured are young and living on tight household budgets. There is also lack of awareness that the tax-payers qualify for assistance for the payment of premiums. The target set by the administration is much lower than the estimate of 20 Million set by the congressional budget analysts for 2016. The massive difference in the numbers raised a few questions about President Obama's law that may crackle and then eventually stall, leaving millions of people unprotected, says Fox 5 Vegas.
If the enrollment fails to meet the set expectations, there may be increased discussions whether the law is meeting the standards in covering the people that are still uninsured and if the subsidies are affordable enough for the low and middle income groups to make the coverage reasonable, says Larry Levitt of Kaiser Family Foundation, reports Post Star. While the next year looks bleak at best, this year's target of 9.1 Million people has been met but next year only a slight progress is expected in enrollments. Obama's law has managed to reduce the number of uninsured Americans by 9% through increased efforts in subsidizing the private insurance and expansion of Medicaid that is aimed at low-income adults.
