Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, "the world's most wanted drug lord" managed to flee from the authorities after he was found out in Northwest Mexico. However, he suffered injuries to his face and leg as he escaped, Mexican officials revealed Friday, according to The International Business Times.

Guzman is the head of the Sinaloa drug cartel and has been on an escape spree since he ran away from "Mexican maximum-security prison" Altoplano last July. The escape proved to be a source of shame for Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto as well as authorities who claimed that he was going to die in his cell.

The Mexican government has been consulting global bodies to close in on him, and is currently searching in the northwest of Mexico, which is near his native turf of Sinaloa state.

"As a result of these actions, and to avoid his capture, in recent days, the fugitive engaged in a hasty retreat, which, according to the information received, caused him injuries to one leg and the face," the government said, according to Reuters. "It's important to clarify that these injuries were not a product of a direct clash."

Earlier in August, the acting head of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration said that the U.S. government believed he was still in Mexico.
