Ohio State Football Player Kosta Karageorge Found Dead From Apparent Self-Inflicted Gunshot
An Ohio State football player, who had gone missing after sending a text message to his parents informing them about his concussion, was found dead in a trash bin late Sunday. Columbus Police said that he had a gunshot wound that appeared to be self-inflicted.
The 22-year-old Ohio State defensive lineman, Kosta Karageorge, was found in a dumpster by a mother-son duo, who were searching the dumpster for items. they contacted the police around 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
"At this time we are able to confirm through tattoos here at the scene that it is the body of Kosta Karageorge,'' said police spokesman Sgt. Rich Weiner.
He further said that an investigation was launched and initial probe reveals that Karageorge must have died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A handgun was found in the dumpster, Weiner added. It needs to be ascertained whether it was the same gun that caused Karageorge's death, USA Today reports.
His mother informed the police that Karageorge was going through a rough time. He had concussions and spells of confusion. She said that he messaged her Wednesday saying that he was sorry if he had been "an embarrassment", ESPN reports.
''I am sorry if I am an embarrassment,'' he wrote in a text that he sent his mother at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Karageorge was supposed to be recognized on senior day during Saturday's home game against Michigan. However, he had gone missing since Wednesday. He had last been seen at his apartment in Columbus. His roommates said that he told them he was going out for a walk and was not seen after that.
His body was found within a couple of hundred yards from his apartment and around half a block from High Street. His parents had filed a missing report Wednesday evening itself.
OSU's athletics department released a statement saying that Karageorge's death had "shocked and saddened" it. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the Karageorge family, and those who knew him, during this most difficult time."
