It's Official! Study Shows Cellphones Can Destroy Relationships
Next time you go out on a dinner date with your partner it may be wise to leave the phone at home. A new study says even momentary cellphone distraction can led to disturbances in relationships.
According to Fox News, researchers at Baylor University in Texas conducted surveys that revealed to them 22.6 people surveyed about Phubbing (act of being snubbed with a cellphone) caused relationship conflicts. Over 400 adults were part of the study.
"In everyday interactions with significant others, people often assume that momentary distractions by their cell phones are not a big deal," study author Meredith David said in a press release.
"What we discovered was that when someone perceived that their partner phubbed them, this created conflict and led to lower levels of reported relationship satisfaction. These lower levels of relationship satisfaction, in turn, led to lower levels of life satisfaction and, ultimately, higher levels of depression," explained James A. Roberts, one of the study's authors.
The survey also found that 37 percent of the participants reported feeling depressed in the relationship at some time.
Researchers cautioned that those with anxious lifestyles are more likely to be affected by phubbing , which could lead to lower satisfaction in a relationship and greater levels of depression.
