ABC Family Commits to Nicki Minaj’s Sitcom, Search for 'Young Nicki' is On!
ABC Family has picked up a comedy about rapper Nicki Minaj.
"This is one of the more unique adventures I've ever embarked on," Minaj said in a statement. "I couldn't be more proud and excited to team up with an amazing group of people to give the world something really special."
The sitcom will be based on Minaj and her family's journey to the United States from Trinidad and Tobago during the early 1990s. The show will primarily focus on how they adjusted to life in Queens, New York as well as the start of Minaj's musical career. MInaj attended LaGuardia high school.
The hunt for an actress to play young Minaj has reportedly started. Minaj will appear in the series, although it is unclear what her role would be.
The pilot was written by Kate Angelo, whose previous work includes “Sex Tape” and “Will and Grace.” Angelo will also write and executive produce the entire series. The other executive producers include Minaj, her manager, Gee Roberson Aaron Kaplan and Brian Sher. The raps will be written by Minaj.
“Nicki Minaj is a force to be reckoned with at everything she touches,” said Karey Burke, executive vice president of programming and development at ABC Family. “We’re beyond thrilled to bring her one-of-a-kind story to our channel. Nicki is an international superstar, yet not everyone knows how inspiring and hilarious her true story is, and we can’t wait to share it with the world.”
