Oakland Raiders Rumors: Derek Carr Healthy for Week 2 Start?
The Oakland Raiders are hopeful that Derek Carr will return in Week 2.
Head coach Jack Del Rio revealed that Carr has bruising on his hand but the injury is "nothing serious." Carr sustained the injury during the second quarter of Week 1's game when he went to stiff-arm Cincinnati Bengals' cornerback Adam Jones with his throwing hand.
"Using his throwing hand as a straight-arm tool, I would probably not ask him to repeat that," Del Rio said.
Del Rio added that despite the positive results from his MRI, he does not know if Carr will be ready for Sunday's game against the Baltimore Ravens. Carr's availability will depend on how bad the swelling is in his hand, which has already started to subside significantly.
"He was up here in the office this morning showing me he could squeeze a ball," Del Rio said. "It was good news. We're all relieved."
Del Rio added that the Raiders do not plan on adding another quarterback but have reportedly been talking to veteran Christian Ponder. In the preseason, Ponder was 22-of-35 for 245 yards, one touchdowns and one interception.
Matt McGloin, who filled in for Carr, completed 23 of 31 for 142 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. When he entered the game, the score was 10-0 in favor of the Bengals.
The Raiders ended up losing 33-13.
