New York Giants Trade for Brad Wing, Cut Veteran Steve Weatherford
The New York Giants have traded for Brad Wing from the Pittsburgh Steelers and cut veteran Steve Weatherford, the team announced. The Steelers received a seventh-round pick for the 2016 NFL draft.
The 24-year-old Australian out of LSU entered the 2013 NFL draft but was not selected. In 2014, he signed a contract with the Steelers.
In 2014, Wing made appearances in all 16 of the regular season games. He punted 41 times for 2,558 years and landed 20 attempts inside the opponents' 20-yard line, the Steelers news released reported. In the team's history, Wing ranked fifth among rookie/first-year punters with his 43.7 average.
Weatherford, 32, who has been with the Giants since 2011, made 80 punts for 3,640 yards in the 2014 season. He reportedly has been dealing a back injury that has caused him to struggle all throughout the preseason and training camp.
Coughlin recently spoke about Weatherford before cutting him.
"You know what we're always after is directional, hang time, distance, location, hang, and the opportunity to put us in the best position from a coverage standpoint," he said reported by Paul Schwartz of the New York Post. "Basically for me, it's always been put it outside the numbers. ... Well, he's [Weatherford] been off and on. He's had some good ones and he's had some that aren't so good."
Weatherford, who was one of the most expensive punters in the NFL, is expected to find a team, especially if his bail injury heals.
