‘Winds of Winter’ Release Date: George R.R. Martin Thinks ‘Games of Thrones’ will be Finished before his Books
The ending of "Games of Thrones" might not follow George R.R. Martin's vision.
Martin, the author of the book series, "A Song of Ice and Fire," which the HBO medieval drama is based on, has two more books left to complete. Even though the sixth book, "Winds of Winter" is rumored to be released before the premiere date of season six of "Games of Throne," Martin does not think that he will finished the final book on time.
"Anything is possible," Martin acknowledged during a Q&A session on Thursday at the Sasquan science-fiction convention in Spokane, Washington reported by the GeekWire. "The show is moving forward like a locomotive, or sometimes a jet locomotive. They're writing 60-page scripts, I'm writing 1,500-page novels. So who the hell knows?"
The show has already diverted a lot from the books' plot lines and producers might choose to diverge even more for season 6 and the remainder of the series.
"There was a period where I was worried about that," Martin said. "Then I said, to hell with that. Worrying about it isn't going to change it one way or another. I still sit down at the typewriter, and I have to write the next scene and the next sentence...I'm just going to tell my story, and they're telling their story and adapting my books, and we shall see. "
At the beginning of August, HBO president Michael Lombardo revealed that "Games of Thrones" might end after season eight.
"I think seven seasons and out has never been the conversation; the question is how much beyond the seventh season are we going to do," Lombardo said during the Television Critics Association (TCA) panel. "[The producers are] feeling like there's probably two more years after six. I would love for them to change their minds, but that's what we're looking at right now."
If that is the case, Martin would only have roughly two years to complete his final book if he wants the show to at least follow some of his stories. With no release date for "Winds of Winter," it is unclear when and how long it would take Martin to write the series ending, which he said, will be "bittersweet." Martin, however, said he is okay with the possibility that the TV show will air its final episode before his seventh book is completed.
"Don't ask me when the book is going to be done - I'll ask my minions to lop your head off," the author joked.
There is no official release date for "Winds of Winter."
