Police Kills Florida University Gunman
Police killed a gunman who opened fire and injured three students in the library of Florida State University early Thursday.
"This is an isolated incident and one person acting alone. There's no indication of any further threat to anybody. Obviously everyone wants to know why. That's the hard answer we're going to continue to investigate," Tallahassee police Chief Michael DeLeo said, CNN reports.
Thousands of students were studying for their final exams at the library when the gunman entered the library. Tallahassee Police spokesman Dave Northway said that they received a call about an "armed subject" at the Strozier Library at 12:30 a.m. ET, NBC News reports.
Police officers reached the spot immediately and ordered the man to drop his weapon. Instead of abiding by their instructions, the unidentified gunman fired a volley of shots.
"The suspect did not comply with the commands and shot at the officers. They returned fire and the suspect was killed," Northway said.
At least three people were injured. While two of the shooting victims were taken to Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare, one was treated and released at the spot. One of the two admitted at the hospital is reportedly very critical and the other is stable, the hospital authorities informed.
John Thrasher, the University President, has described the incident as an "isolated" one and also praised the police officials for doing "an extraordinary job taking quick and decisive action to prevent further tragedy," USA Today reports.
Classes were cancelled Thursday and counselling sessions have been organised for the students and staff members.
