Matisyahu Concert Not Allowed In Spain Due To His Refusal To Speak About His Stand On Israel
Jewish-American singer, Matisyahu was not allowed to perform in eastern Spain's week-long Rototom Sunsplash festival after he failed to comment on his stand on Zionism and towards Palestinians in Israel.
In a report from Vox, members of the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) in Valencia, Spain accused the 36-year old singer as being a sympathizer of Zionist and has defended Israel, said to have practiced apartheid and ethnic cleaning.
The reggae artist is said to have shown sympathy over Israel in a Facebook post on August 11 which has prompted suspicions of him supporting the country.
At first, organizers of the pro-Palestinian music festival, stood by the reggae artist, however, days later, head organizer, Filippo Giunta urged the One Day singer to clarify his stand to the public.
The singer's refusal then prompted them to cancel his show.
On a Facebook post, the Pennsylvanian-borne rapper responded to the controversy, Fox News said.
"The festival organizers contacted me because they were getting pressure from the BDS movement. They wanted me to write a letter, or make a video, stating my positions on Zionism and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to pacify the BDS people. I support peace and compassion for all people. My music speaks for itself, and I do not insert politics into my music," he said.
Meanwhile, in separate Facebook post, the Rototom organizers defended their side saying that the decision is made due to the "festival's sensitivity to Palestine, its people and the occupation of its territory by Israel, Times of Israel said.
Matisyahu, whose real name is Matthew Miller, is scheduled to perform in the Rototom Sunsplash Festival on August 22.
